A COMMISSIONER FOR OATHS IS SOMEONE WHO ...

-
is certified to endorse affirmations and declarations; they can also take and receive affidavits or administer oaths.
-
affixes a stamp certifying that the required oath, affirmation, or declaration has been properly administered.
-
does not certify the truth of the statements contained in a document; this responsibility remains with the client.
-
is not responsible for the content of the affidavit; it is the responsibility of the person whose signature is being commissioned (i.e. the client).
-
is not a Notary Public. A Notary Public has all the powers of a Commissioner of Oaths, and can also endorse documents to be used outside of the Province. A Notary Public is generally a practicing lawyer and can witness, certify and attest business documents, contracts and property deeds. It is the responsibility of the client to ensure a Commissioner for Oaths can sign the documents.
